Pilot participants said:

"The Leading UQ workshop program has been the most valuable leadership training program that I have participated in. It provides ten intensive day-long sessions spread across the year, designed to explore important leadership principles, challenge one’s self-perception and assumptions, apprehend the organisational and legal contexts in which one operates, amid a cohort of colleagues drawn from across the University who frequently discuss the challenges of their professional circumstances, thereby making the principles real."

"This program challenged my expectations, not only in terms of the form and function of leadership, but also of myself. Over the course of the program I was carefully and effectively pushed to understand, confront and improve my relationship with and to leadership. This has made a profound difference to how I view myself, leadership and the impact and effect that I have on those with whom I work, live and play, and has encouraged me to empower others to do the same. This is not a standard didactic model leadership program: I would encourage anyone who wants to challenge and improve themselves and their leadership style to take this program."

Who should attend?

The program is designed for senior leaders at UQ who are established in their roles and who seek to deepen their engagement with UQ’s strategy and environment and contextualise their leadership capability. This group includes Heads of Schools, Heads of Research Centres, Associate Deans, Deputy Directors of Institutes, Faculty Executive Managers, Directors and Associate Directors within Divisions and equivalent academic and professional leadership roles.

The program will challenge you: it is designed for leaders who are willing to develop and change their ways of thinking and behaving, to experiment with new approaches, and to share their learning journey with a network of like-minded colleagues.

Participation requirements

The program is designed around a series of action-oriented face-to-face workshops - a total of 10.5 days between March and September. In addition to participation in workshops, all enrolees will undertake the UQ Leadership Survey 360-degree feedback process and associated executive coaching. Throughout the program, participants will apply insights to their own situations and challenges, and design and implement actions to enhance their leadership effectiveness.

The program is hosted by Tamma Sorbello from UQ's Organisational Development Unit with a network of practical facilitators and contributors, including UQ’s academic and professional staff experts and external consultants.

The program involves a heavy time commitment, with ten days of workshops between March and September. The Leading UQ program workshops are fully funded by the University Staff Development Committee. As a component of the program, participants will undertake the UQ Leadership Survey 360-degree feedback exercise. This process includes three sessions of executive coaching, which must be funded by the participant’s organisational unit. Costs will vary depending on the coach selected by the leader.
