Our leadership philosophy

Leadership is about what you do, not about your job title.

Leadership is about how you engage with others, how you think about your work, and how you bring the two together to achieve more than you could otherwise.

Leadership is not about one individual. Leadership is about the group, the team, the organisation, and what they are able to accomplish with the encouragement of leaders - many leaders, working together. Leadership is not a singular activity. Leadership is a collaborative venture.

We aim to develop a leadership culture where all employees, regardless of position, stream or level - both formal and informal leaders - are able to demonstrate their leadership and contribute to the accomplishments of the university.

How do we support leadership at UQ?

The UQ Leadership Framework identifies the capabilities that are critical to demonstrating leadership at UQ. These capabilities are applicable to both formal and informal leaders, across all levels and roles. Explore the framework via the framework homepage or individual capability pages:

Our suite of leadership development programs includes courses designed to support UQ leaders at all levels to develop their capabilities and demonstrate their leadership.

Additional development ideas and leadership resources enable people to continue their development journey outside of formal programs.

The UQ Leadership Community is an open network of people across UQ who are interested in developing their knowledge and skills, discussing leadership, and building a culture that encourages leadership at all levels.

The UQ Leadership Survey offers leaders an opportunity to gather feedback and increase their effectiveness through a 360-degree survey process designed specifically to support the UQ Leadership Framework.

The New to UQ - Senior Leaders Program supports senior leaders to streamline their transition to their new leadership role at UQ.
